On the north side of the island there is too much water, and on the south side not enough. So the the inhabitants built open aquaeducts running along the slopes for many kilometers and crossing mountain ranges in tunnels: Those "Levadas" are ideal for beautiful hikes. The Leavada on the picture, the "Levada do Norte" is very green an runs through two tunnels of about 500m.
