The genus Pinus (pines) is characterized by its long shouts only covered with scale leaves, whereas the short shouts have some scarious scale leaves and in most cases 2-5 perennial needles. In total it consists of about 110 species on the whole northern hemisphere. Perhaps the pines of all trees cover the largest area on earth.
